Research Courses
With the ever increasing need to ensure proper research practice in orthopaedic surgery, and to communicate research results effectively, there are OTCF Clinical Research Courses given by invited faculty at national and regional levels on a regular basis. There are about two courses given each year, in cooperation with OTC Chapters or other national or international orthopaedic associations.
“Principles and Practice of Clinical Research” is the title of these courses, emphasizing design, analysis and participation within orthopaedic trauma research.
The aim of the course is to transmit the basic skills for conducting quality clinical research on an international scale, and to provide the essential background to understand the “language of research”. The target group of participants is surgeons leading a clinical research study or participating as a site investigator.
The course syllabus focuses on:
- • Introduction to Evidence-Based Orthopaedic Surgery
- • Principles of Clinical Research
- • Clinical Case Series
- • Prospective Cohort Studies
- • Randomized Clinical Trials
- • Participating in Multi-Center Clinical Research
- • Limiting Bias in Clinical Research
- • Ethics Approval for Clinical Studies
- • Research Proposals: good and bad examples
- • Writing Papers for Publication
- • Basic Statistical Analysis
These courses are based upon a generic program developed and refined during courses held in recent years. The textbooks underlying the lectures and practical breakout sessions are edited by Mohit Bhandari and Anders Joensson:
- • Clinical Research for Surgeons, 315 pp
- • Getting Your Research Paper Published – A Surgical Perspective, 162 pp
- • Advanced Concepts in Clinical Research, in preparation
