Education Fellowships
The OTC Foundation offers Education Fellowships in the field of orthopaedic trauma surgery. The objective is to enhance the Fellows’ skills in the area of orthopaedic trauma care.
The Fellowship experience allows for knowledge acquisition within the following scientific fields:
- • Surgical as well as non-surgical management of musculoskeletal injuries.
- • Clinical and radiological musculoskeletal evaluation of the injured patient.
- • Algorithmic decision-making with respect to timing and sequencing of multiple injury management.
- • Pathophysiology of the multiple-injured patient. Understanding the prophylaxis and/or treatment of the complications of musculoskeletal injuries.
- • Understanding of advanced technology and instrumentation in treating trauma patients.
- • Ethical, economic, and legal issues as they pertain to orthopaedic trauma care.
The Fellow will acquire scientific knowledge and have the opportunity to observe surgeries.
Types of OTC Foundation Education Fellowships and conditions
4-week-fellowships for a senior resident or surgeon:
- • Must be in the 5th or 6th year of an approved program or
- • Experienced surgeon (more than five years of experience) – in an early post-graduate stage but less than five years out of orthopaedic residency or specialization training.
2-week-fellowships for an experienced surgeon:
- • More than five years out and meeting all requirements of graduation from an orthopaedic residency program.
- • Must be currently employed as an active surgeon in an orthopaedic practice and traumatology.
All applicants must speak English fluently. Applicants with Spanish as their mother tongue and only limited English knowledge may be assigned to the Host Center in Spain.
Financial aspects
OTC Foundation will organize and pay for the travel and a modest accommodation at or close to the Host Center. Expenses in accordance with the OCTF ‘Per Diem and Reimbursement Policy’ will be refunded to the Fellow against receipt only (max. 100.- CHF/day). The compensation for any expenses occurred during the Fellowship will be transferred to the fellow only after realization of the Fellowship.
Timeline
Applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis by OTCF’s Education Committee. Feedback to applicants on acceptance and duration or on rejection may take up to three months.
